Join the ‘Advocacy Action Then Donation Ask’ Bandwagon

I love the smell of a well formatted advocacy thank you page in the morning. Especially when the thank you page is not only thanking me for taking action, but suggesting I share the advocacy action with my friends using social media… AND starring a bold fundraising ask, too.

There’s been lots of buzz on npENGAGE recently about turning advocates into donors.  I especially love a recent post by my colleague Dennis McCarthy about just this topic. Give it a read and bask in the glory of Dennis and his online marketing genius.


Take a gander at this most excellent example. The folks at American Rivers are using that valuable real estate after action alerts are completed so well. Check out the social sharing buttons and donation ask, too.  It is that easy, but shockingly, many organizations don’t include either of these important aspects on their ‘thank you’ pages.  Adding social sharing buttons and a donation ask to advocacy thank you page are two easy things you can do (today) to spruce up your advocacy program and bring in some extra dollars at the same time.


I sat down with Ezra Billinkoff at M+R Strategic Services to discuss this very topic (read: I ran into Ezra on the sidewalk on the Upper West Side over the weekend) and he left me with some very pithy parting words…

There are too many groups missing the opportunity to convert activists to donors at the moment those supporters take an advocacy action. Instead of landing an online petition-signer on a tell-a-friend page — or even worse, a plain-old thank-you page — consider directing that person to a donation page.  Show them how donating to support your cause is just the second step in taking action on the issue they care about.  Don’t hesitate to throw some social network sharing tools onto the page. You’d be surprised at the number of people sharing and donating.

Perhaps we’re just too polite? We don’t want to ask someone to do something after they just took an advocacy action… I’m going challenge you to be bold! Strike while the iron is hot and pile on the asks.  Then, tell us how it goes in the comments section of this post.
